Engagement photography is one of my favorite aspects of wedding photography. Engagement photography can be an adventure and a time to really mesh and get to know each other before the wedding day, ensuring that not only are you comfortable in front of the camera, but you also know exactly what to expect from your wedding photographer.
Tip #1: Discuss ideas for the session.
Is there a theme for your engagement photos? Some clients like to go all out and create an adventure for their engagement photos. We have traveled to the mountains, the beach, we have even taken boats out on the lake. Engagement photos are a time that you and your fiance get to be part of a little adventure and simultaneously have your wedding photographer capture your love story.
Tip #2: Plan your wardrobe carefully.
We like to share our Pinterest board of wardrobe ideas with our clients before the engagement session. Typically a few weeks prior, enabling them time to plan, purchase and have everything in order before we actually embark on the engagement photography session. We suggest having two outfits per session. One more laid back and relaxing and the other more upscale and swanky. Consider jewelry, shoes, color coordination, etc. when planning your wardrobe.
Tip #3: Consider what you want to do with the engagement photos.
Do you plan on creating an album? Do you want to hang wall art around the home? Whatever your ultimate focus for your engagement photos, discuss this with your wedding photographer in advance, it will help them when deciding some of the ways in which they photograph you and your fiance.
Tip #4: Consider having a professional complete your hair and makeup
Yeah, we know, you know your face and hair better than anyone. Which is exactly why you want a professional to complete your hair and makeup for your wedding. Perhaps consider using your wedding day hair and makeup artist so you can have a better idea of working with her/him. Either way, leave this aspect to the professionals, they know what looks best for photography.
Tip #5 Don’t over think it.
You are with your beau - just have fun. Work directly with your wedding photographer to come up with a location that both of you would enjoy and just go with the flow. Think of your photographer as a director on a movie set. Great professional photographers should easily be able to guide you on location, props, wardrobe, and the general theme of the engagement session. Your job is to show up - mentally and physically and HAVE FUN!
