Historic Latta Plantation Engagement Session | Jing-Jing + Andrew | Huntersville NC

David Morgan - Tuesday, March 11, 2014
For a couple who met in an accounting class, Jingjing and Andrew have a surprisingly adventurous side to them that they wanted to incorporate into their engagement photography shoot in Charlotte NC. As big fans of the great outdoors, this duo walked through the fields, shared a kiss against the wall of a grand rustic barn, and got lost in the forest of Historic Latta Plantation in Huntersville NC. As the romantic pair drifted downstream in a canoe, the fall colors reflected in the waters surrounding them, making for a spectacular finale to their pastoral engagement photo session. Did I really just write that?

There is this really cool lot of land just around the corner from my house (see it in the picture above) where there are these rolling hills and trees in the backdrop and when the sun back lights them at their respective Golden Hour, it's freaking ethereal.  So we romped around these fields for a bit or two or 45 and I just let Jing and Andrew do their thang.  That's the thing about photography, sometimes I think photographers get too caught up in capturing that next great photo... that they saw on Pinterest. Instead of just photographing, creating images, you know, of people, being people.

They asked for fields, streams, lakes, hills,, you know, North Carolina.  Jing wanted to show her family back home in Japan, what it's like where she lives. What better place than Historic Latta Plantation in the heart of Huntersville, North Carolina?  I spend at least two days/week at Latta.  Half those photos you see me social media-ing about, if it's nature, then good bet it's Latta.

There's this spot on one of the trails I frequent where the spruce trees or fir trees or whatever lizard-like scaly tree that is in the image above, where they go straight up in the air 50 feet, and by and large, it's like they are the bullies of the tree hood, because there are very few other trees challenging them for real estate.  And if you can find one of the larger window perspectives that offers the best look through bokeh at just the right angle you get shots like this (above).

Do I even need to say anything about this photo?Seriously, how gorgeous are they?  I get to meet a lot of couples that come to me for photography and while I'd like to sit here and tell you "wow what a perfect couple, they're soulmates...yada yada yada" that EVERYONE is then i'd be lying.  But Jing-Jing and Andrew... Jing-Jing!? Andrew?!  You guys got it.

Did I mention Latta Plantation has docks? Docks anyone? :)  Who doesn't love an engagement photo with a lovely couple sitting on the dock as the sun dips and highlights the changing leaves colors?

Oh and btw, we had a canoe. So funny story about the canoe.  So I am walking down the trail ahead of Jing and Andrew doing some advance recon and I see people inside the normally gated and always vacant Ranger station.  So i scurry ahead and there are three dudes sitting inside this canoe containment zone and there are like fifty freaking canoes in various sizes and colors and I am like if Skull members go to some heaven, this is probably what they see.  So I introduce myself to who appears kind of in charge, well he was sitting and the other two were moving boats around, what am I to conclude?  And I tell him what I am doing, who I am (means nothing), flash my giant Canon 70-200 mm 2.8 around a bit flashy and demonstrative and ask him if I can borrow this boat for Jing-Jing and Andrew, "you know the princess from Japan". He was like, "go right ahead, grab whatever you need, do you mind if we watch?"  So anyway, here you go, here is the photo I took and that's that. :)

After the canoe shot on the lake, I was like, "I got the shots I need" and I started walking back after the exculpatory high-fives, and "nice work" we headed back to the car, as I was walking ahead again, I decided to turn down a path I had not yet explored in my hundreds previous trips here with my little chiclets and I stumbled upon this (Above).  I mean, somebody got it right in this little slice of the globe.  The leaves slowly fell over the couple as they just kissed.  Coming off the euphoric high of spending the last 3 hours hugging, kissing, touching, loving because they wanted to.  And I photographed this engagement photo.  Un-rehearsed, un-prompted, them just being them.  That's creating images, you know, of people being people.  Peace and Love
