Last week, we were fortunate enough to be able to travel back to Deevo's motherland of Southern California. It had been the better part of the decade since he had been to his hometown of San Diego, so we jumped at the chance to do a photo shoot in LA and spent about five days tooling around various coastal towns of SoCal. I was not prepared for the character and warmth (not temperature - I'm talking REAL soul) of this sunny state, which in itself feels like a separate continent.
We flew into LA and drove immediately to Ventura Beach, where we spent most of our time. Surf meets mountains meets palm trees meets the heavens. That very evening, we had a photo session on the beach where Deevo risked his life - uhhmmmm, equipment in the pounding waves. Our second day was a bucket-list day for both of us. Deevo had of course wanted to trek down to San Diego, and neither of us had ever been on that portion of THE ONE(we have an ongoing debate over whether it is called Highway One, or THE ONE, as Deevo titles all highways/freeways with a capital The. Being Southern, I just say the number. Cast your vote here). So, we drove down the Pacific Coast Highway through Malibu, Santa Monica, etc. until we arrived in San Diego. I'll have to say that experiencing the beaches and cliffs in Malibu were one of the most profound moments of my life. Sitting there perched high above the water's edge, simply being still, this is how tiny I felt. I was in awe of everything in front of me.We explored San Diego in such a whirlwind that there honestly are not too many photos. We did get to spend a little bit of time at Sunset Cliffs which is stunning albeit a little crowded. We then returned back to Ventura Beach where we spent the few remaining days hiking, stuffing our faces with seafood, true California tacos and cold-pressed beet juice(seriously), and tooling around the beaches and cool-ass thrift stores in downtown. Deevo discovered the fashion aspects of seaweed:
And we created many a still life photograph with the natural artifacts found on their pristine beaches.
Our final day we found the time to hike up to one of Ventura's mountaintops overlooking the ocean. A desert mountain right next to the ocean - it just baffles me. And now I want to fill my house with cacti. This view! Do you see this view for crying out loud?!! We WILL be returning, Southern Cali...sooner rather than later. It was heartbreaking to leave - probably even more so this time around for Deevo. We will be posting photos soon of Ashley and Clint's engagement session (some actual humans in our Cali photos! Who knew?!). Until then, see you soon, beautiful California, it was REAL.
