3 Steps to Finding a Fun & Creative Wedding Photographer

Ten years from now, it won’t be the taste of your wedding cake or the smell of the flowers that you remember. In fact, most of the details that you spent so much time obsessing over will have faded from your memory. However, as the weeks, months, and years pass, you will be able to turn to your wedding photography to relive your special day.

Clearly, the wedding photographer you choose plays a crucial role in the quality of the photographs you look back on time and time again. It is not a decision that should be made lightly. For the best results, you need to choose the wedding photographer that matches your style and personality flawlessly, which does take a little bit of work—but trust us, in twenty years when you are looking back on your gorgeous wedding photography with your spouse, it will all be worth it.

Step 1: Inspect the Wedding Photography Portfolio

Your love story is unlike anyone else’s, so why would you settle for average wedding photography? Instead, you need to check out some portfolios (make sure you view a full wedding and not just the wedding photography that is highlighted on their website). Every wedding photographer has a signature style and a distinctive set of talents, and you need to find the one that meshes with your expectations. Pay attention to:

  • Lighting – Does the photographer have experience shooting in the same type of lighting your wedding is going to take place in, such as by the ocean or in a dark ballroom? Does the wedding photographer use light to create different moods and emotions, or is everything the same brightness level?
  • Composition – You have seen the standard wedding photography poses, but you want to find a creative wedding photographer that can give you something extra special to treasure. Get absorbed in the stories the photographer tells in their wedding photography, and find one that draws you in.
  • Style – Do you like how the wedding photographer captures different angles and puts a unique twist on their wedding photography? Do they capture the spirit of the couple? Are the photos all posed, or are there some candid shots?
Step 2: Perform Some Detective Work

Once you have discovered a few wedding photography portfolios that make you happy, it’s time to put your detective hat on. While the reviews on the wedding photographer’s website are probably legit, you will want to turn to some third-party sources to get the real scoop, such as The Knot or Wedding Wire. If possible, scour their social media pages as well to see how they interact with their clients.

Step 3: Interview Your Subject

By now, you should have your wedding photographer search narrowed down, so it’s time to meet the finalists in person. After all, you will be spending a lot of time with them so you better make sure you get along with each other. At your in-person interview, don’t be afraid to ask questions and make your wants and desires known. It’s our job to exceed all of your expectations, which is hard to do if we don’t know what they are.

Your wedding day is magical and your wedding photography is how you will remember it for decades to come. If you follow these steps, you will be sure to have incredible wedding photography that you will cherish for the rest of your life.
