Don't Settle for the School's Idea of Portraits

The school year is starting up soon (or for some of you lucky parents, it already has), and that means school portraits are right around the corner. You know, those photographs the school takes of your lovely little ones…those awkward photographs that often don’t show your kids’ best sides.

Instead of relying on the school photographer to get one good shot on school portrait day, consider hiring a professional photographer to capture your child’s good side—and his or her personality. Following are just a few reasons to opt for a pro rather than what the school calls a photographer.

You’ll Get Multiple Great Pictures

Instead of just one picture to choose from, you’ll have a multitude of great portraits of your kids. You’ll get more than one awesome photograph out of the deal, and you won’t have to roll the dice on whether or not little Bobby or Susie will blink at the wrong moment or forget to smile.

The Photographer Will Spend Ample Time with Your Child

School photographers spend at most a couple of minutes with your child—definitely not enough time to get to know their personality and help it shine in the photograph. A professional photographer, on the other hand, will spend hours with your family and your kids, meaning that he or she will be able to get to know each child on an individual basis and create moments that allow each child’s personality to shine.

You Can Get Some Outdoors Shots

Staying indoors for portraits is boring! By going with a professional, you open up the opportunity to take the shoot outdoors, where natural light can do wonders for the photographs captured. Also, you have the chance to bring some props if you’d like—is little Jimmy an avid soccer player? Bring a soccer ball! Does little Jenny love to dance? Have her bring her ballet slippers for an impromptu dance party.

Wardrobe Changes Are an Option

Let’s be honest: it’s easy to forget exactly when school portraits are taking place, which means you may send your kids to school in clothes you’d rather not have them wear on the big day. When you set up a portrait session with a pro, you not only know when the portraits are happening so you can dress your little ones in their Sunday best, you also have the option to add a couple of quick wardrobe changes in the mix.

The above are only a few of the reasons that we prefer using a professional photographer over the school’s photographer for school pictures.

My husband and I had the pleasure of working with Fusion Photography for our wedding, and were so thrilled to have worked with Deevo and his team. He lent a hand to almost every aspect for our wedding, even borrowing a leaf blower to ensure we had a clean outdoor pavilion.
