We met Sarah and Jon on one of his very few trips back home from Missouri, where he is stationed in the Army. They have an adorable story, high school sweethearts who met in math class. Sara is a sensitive, poetry-loving writer and Jon is…well, just about as goofy and fun-loving as you can get. They laugh ALL the time. No, like ALL the time. There must be something to say about long-distance relationships, because these two can’t get enough of each other. Their energy is simply infectious.
We drove up to Graylyn Estate in Winston-Salem, NC for their engagement session. This place is absolutely stunning. The estate itself was built in the 1920's, and the grounds offer everything one could want for a photography session – rolling hills, ponds, stone bridges, groves of beautiful old trees, intimate pathways, virtually hundreds of photo opportunities abound. Since Jon was only going to be in town for his typical fourteen minutes, we were pressed for time and moved quickly to capture every image possible with these two lovebirds.
Sara and Jon's only specific photo request
was to have a photo taken with the American flag. This wound up being everyone's favorite image from the entire session - we tweaked and styled the
flag just so, enough to show the lace of Sara's dress and still showing both stars and stripes. Somehow, it didn't come across contrived in the slightest.
The bokeh sunlight through the trees behind them and his kiss on her forehead added plenty of candid spontaneity to counteract the planned nature of
how this photo came to be. And there is no denying that these two love every second they get to actually be in the other's presence. You can't exactly
plan that, can you?
The main thing that Deevo and I noticed immediately about Sara and Jon was that they needed ZERO warm-up time. Deevo’s famous phrase is “photo calisthenics,” in which he gets our subjects comfortable and does a series of test shots and includes light instruction and conversation in order for them to warm up and start being themselves and less nervous. Check out our trailer HERE to see what some of this entails. EVERYONE needs this for successful photography. Well…everyone except Sara and Jon, that is! Right from the start, they were at home, laughing and joking with each other and being as affectionate as two people can be legally in public. Deevo was practically silent for much of the session, which as we all know is no major feat in itself! He let Sara and Jon take the reigns and enjoy each other while we captured moment after moment of the true love that this couple shares.
Sara and Jon, on your engagement and future life together! We will be photographing Sara's bridal session as well as their wedding this December at
Wake Forest's Reynolda Hall and simply cannot wait!
